Feeding the World Without Genetic Engineering- Farmers don't need genetic engineering to boost crop yields, according to professors from Kansas State University and the University of Minnesota. Using a sophisticated plant breeding technique called marker-assisted selection (MAS), the scientists are working to develop high-yielding varieties of corn, sorghum, wheat, and barley without inserting foreign genes. They have found that analyzing the entire crop genome (the full set of chromosomes), rather than just short segments of the genome, increases the efficiency of the MAS process. This important find, combined with the ever-decreasing cost of analyzing molecular "markers," makes genome-wide marker-assisted selection an efficient, low-cost alternative to genetic engineering.

SOLAR POWER GETS AFFORDABLE- A new company in California's Silicon Valley has begun production on a new electricity generating solar cell that many are considering to be revolutionary. The company, Nanosolar, prints the solar cells on aluminum film in an inexpensive process that will supposedly make solar power as affordable as electricity from coal. Nanosolar says its order books are already full until 2008.

The language of the Florida Constitution actually goes further than the U.S. Constitution in protecting religious freedom with a provision that expressly prohibits the use of public funds in aid of "any church, sect or religious denomination or in aid of any sectarian institution."
